Late winter: Patience, healing and planning

March 14, 2023 / Dan Gjelten / 6 Comments

Our last post came out during the beauty of October, when we were putting our time and energy into taking care of our aged dog, Finn. Of course, living in Minnesota, we also were on the verge of winter and ignorant of how it would go (it has been a doozy.) Sadly, we report that … Continue reading Late winter: Patience, healing and planning

Winding Down, Bittersweet Beauty

October 6, 2022October 6, 2022 / Dan Gjelten / 8 Comments

In the last few days, the trees along the Mississippi River near our house have exploded in color, practically overnight. While we’ve had a couple of warmer than normal days in the high 70’s, today the high will hardly reach 60. The Twin Cities Marathon is over and our local radio station (The Current, 89.3) … Continue reading Winding Down, Bittersweet Beauty

Day 10: Elmsford to Times Square (The end is near)

July 5, 2022October 6, 2022 / Dan Gjelten / 3 Comments

The next morning we went down to breakfast and again were glad we'd made the change of hotels. We had a good breakfast and chatted with people who were competing in the Westminster Dog Show which was happening in nearby Tarrytown. The Westminster is usually held in the city around Valentine's Day, but it is … Continue reading Day 10: Elmsford to Times Square (The end is near)

Day 9: Kingston to Elmsford

July 5, 2022December 28, 2022 / Dan Gjelten / Leave a comment

After a really nice evening in Kingston, we got another early start on Saturday morning, around 6:45. We had a 95 mile day ahead of us, to Elmsford, a little town in Westchester County and close to Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. I'd declared last year that we would not be doing anymore long days like … Continue reading Day 9: Kingston to Elmsford

Day 8: Albany to Kingston

June 20, 2022June 20, 2022 / Dan Gjelten / 2 Comments

We woke early on Friday, knowing we had a 75 mile day down to Kingston. It was strange to pack up and leave without Cindy and Paul, but they were sleeping in and then planning to walk about Albany as they got ready for a 7:00 pm train departure back to St. Paul. So it … Continue reading Day 8: Albany to Kingston

Day 7: Amsterdam to the Hudson River and Albany

June 16, 2022June 16, 2022 / Dan Gjelten / 2 Comments

We slept in a little this morning as we only had 49 miles left on this leg of our trip. Our hours in Amsterdam were fun, restful and nourishing - it was a pretty and friendly little town. We coasted down the steep hill by the Castle and were back on the trail in minutes, … Continue reading Day 7: Amsterdam to the Hudson River and Albany

About Us

Hello from Dan and Lisa! We live near the Mississippi River in St. Paul, MN. One morning a few years ago, one of us said ‘hey, maybe we should ride our bikes from our front door to the French Quarter.’  And that’s what we did. This blog is intended to serve as a chronicle of that trip and other adventures, at the  “confluence” between us and the river, people, art, music, food and culture we’ll experience along the way.
