Day One: St. Paul to Frontenac State Park

May 20, 2018February 5, 2021 / Dan Gjelten / 5 Comments

This will be brief because we're tired and in our tent which is cozy so we'll be sleeping soon. The day was beautiful - great riding and perfect weather. Highlights included a flat tire on Lisa's bike in Hastings which we repaired pretty quickly, meeting two St. Thomas people (Amanda from my office was working … Continue reading Day One: St. Paul to Frontenac State Park

All of our possessions for the next month

May 16, 2018February 5, 2021 / Dan Gjelten / 8 Comments

Some have asked what we are bringing, so here is a picture. From left to right, sleeping bags, tent, pads, tiny camping chairs, clothes (Lisa's are in the orange stuff sack), maps, technology (including a borrowed solar collector), cook kit and stove, first aid kit, a couple books, bike tools, Clif bars, water bottles, shoes. … Continue reading All of our possessions for the next month

Ray Bonneville and the Big Easy

May 15, 2018February 5, 2021 / Lisa / Leave a comment

Last week, our Austin-based friend Ray Bonneville had a show at the Aster Cafe in Minneapolis, in the River Room...it was a beautiful, intimate setting, almost like a living room show. In addition to playing songs from his new album, he played "Big Easy" for us. And we were delighted when he ended up staying … Continue reading Ray Bonneville and the Big Easy

Bike study on St. Thomas Minneapolis campus

May 14, 2018February 5, 2021 / Lisa / Leave a comment

I had the great privilege of getting to know these St. Thomas undergraduate students during spring semester as they were working on their Marketing 340 research project. They were assigned the task of conducting an analysis of the bike culture on the Minneapolis campus, where I work; there seems to be a disconnect between the … Continue reading Bike study on St. Thomas Minneapolis campus

One week out

May 14, 2018February 5, 2021 / Dan Gjelten / Leave a comment

One week from departure, just back from a quick 40 mile ride which felt very easy, I do want to describe my feelings. I can’t wait to just get started, for one thing.  We’ve been planning this trip for over a year now, maybe closer to two.  We’ve studied maps, selected equipment, trained our bodies, … Continue reading One week out

I love Enid's map, though these show a bit more detail about where we are headed.

About Us

Hello from Dan and Lisa! We live near the Mississippi River in St. Paul, MN. One morning a few years ago, one of us said ‘hey, maybe we should ride our bikes from our front door to the French Quarter.’  And that’s what we did. This blog is intended to serve as a chronicle of that trip and other adventures, at the  “confluence” between us and the river, people, art, music, food and culture we’ll experience along the way.
